Anyone owned one? Anything to look out for reliability wise?

I continue my quest to find something to replace my Accord with something fun with a manual and had completely written off the GTI in the back of my mind as being a maintenance nightmare.

My wife’s car is 66k miles and still not one issue. 2011 GTI Autobahn trim.

I hear they are more reliable than the MK5; that said it’s still a VW.

timing chain issues have been popping up, carbon buildup at higher miles, small things here and there. But like with any other car, preventative maintenance goes a long way.

I’ve heard problems with the high pressure fuel pump. Other than that, typical stuff. I had a Mk6 gold TDI with about 105k when I turned it in to VW and zero issues with the chassis/suspension/interior.

If it has a VW badge on it, it’s best to look out for everything. I had a recent Volkswagen. I will never have a Volkswagen again.

I had a MKV, 125k when sold. Never had an issue beyond regular maintenance.in fact my next car may be a new(ish) GTI again, once I pay off my truck.

Have a mk5 GTI and there is a few annoyances but most were ironed out in the mk6. Not unreliable, just need to service regularly.

I had one for about 30k miles. One evaporative emissions slow leak check light, cleared and no further problems. The only reason I sold it was to get something with a stick shift. I had the DSG which was, on paper, a better transmission. I now have a MK7 GTI with a stick.

I will say the limited slip in the MK7 performance package makes a huge difference, if you can find one of those in budget. The brakes are more linear than the MK6 as well.

Had one for around 5 years 75k. Thing was a train wreck...intake manifold, electrics, water pump, even the fucking coolant globe broke...that’s about a third of the issues. Worst vehicle I ever purchased new.
